Attend the MTA Board Meeting!
Tuesday, October 21st , 3:30 pm—City Hall, Room 400
September 16 Hearing Recap:
A number of the save39bus committee members and neighbors showed up to give testimony of the unique hardship. A specific request was made to have a 'trial period' of 3 years during which neighborhood organizations and MTA will work in partnership to improve ridership of the bus. The MTA board sub-committee will make recommendations in response to public input, including the 39 bus, at the next meeting on October 21st. |
A Case of Unique Hardship and a Call to Action!
History does repeat itself sometimes and here we go again!
In 1954, North Beach and Telegraph Hill residents fought to save the Coit 39 bus service from being eliminated as a result of cost cutbacks by the Municipal Railway. Thanks to neighborhood efforts at the time, the 39 was saved and the only link of transit serving hilltop residents was preserved.
54 years later, we find ourselves fighting the same fight all over again!
As part of the Transportation Effective Plan (TEP) to improve transit and cut costs, MTA staff is recommending cutting the 39 bus service, and specifically the part of the route serving residents up to Union & Montgomery.
The impact of this cut to seniors, the disabled and all the hilltop residents who rely on bus service is tremendous. We must once again, fight to save the 39 bus!
At the September 16th meeting of the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) board, the Commissioners will vote on the staff recommendation to cut service. We must TAKE ACTION NOW!
You can help save the 39 bus service by signing a petition, writing a letter, collecting signatures and telling your friends and neighbors about this. If you have any other ideas, please contact us at save39bus@gmail.com.
Mostly importantly, our voice must be heard at the hearing on September 16th. If you want to keep the bus service, please come to the hearing and speak up.
