Approval by the THD Board of Directors, May 13, 2008:
- THD supports the Transit Effectiveness Project [TEP]. The TEP review of the entire MUNI system is much needed and its approach is creative, insightful and based on extensive examination of existing conditions, trends and needs.
- THD recommends that MUNI reaffirm that service will be retained on all routes that serve significant hills, allowing elderly and infirm residents in such neighborhoods to have access to public transportation.
- THD strongly opposes the TEP proposal to eliminate #39 bus service to this hilltop location. There is a significant population of elderly and infirm residents, as well as those who do not use cars, near the Union/Montgomery hilltop neighborhood who depend on public transportation for essential services such as grocery shopping and medical appointments. This proposal to eliminate service to the Union/Montgomery hilltop location would deprive our most vulnerable residents of their only link to public transportation.
- THD is prepared to work with MUNI, other city agencies, and other stakeholders in formulating a plan to increase overall ridership on the #39 bus through improved publicity, route modification at Fishermen’s Wharf, and improved reliability, including mitigation of traffic congestion near Coit Tower.
- THD strongly supports the proposed revisions to the #19 bus line because it provides better links between North Beach / Telegraph Hill, the financial district, South of Market, Civic Center, and Fisherman’s wharf. THD would like the service level on the new #19 route to at least match the combined service on the former #15 and #41 lines.
